ANDY ITYAV TENNIS INITIATIVE(AITI) is a non-profitable Organisation established in January 2011 to develop, promote and revive the game of tennis in Benue State and Nigeria at large. Following the almost non- existing support for the game in Benue State, we could no longer boast of great players in junior and senior national tennis circuits.
ANDY ITYAV TENNIS INTIATIVE (AITI) took aggressive steps to revamp the sport in Benue and within just a short period of its formation, the state is already reaping gains from this philantrophic project. We sponsored and organized its 1st program, a talent hunt tennis clinics/ tournament for kids ages 4 -14 years in April 2011 at the Aper- Aku Stadium Tennis complex Makurdi, featuring 20 kids (12 boys and 8 girls) participants and 4 coaches. In August 2011. We organised our second clinic/tournament for same age category and at the same venue. We registered 68 kids in attendance of which 27 were girls. It is of note to mention that these programs have been free of charge to the kids. (SPORT EQUIPMENTS AND FEEDING).
From the two clinics, we discovered 10 kids(8 boys and 2 girls) improving at a rapid rate. Hence, we continued a special evening training session for them during the school term periods. AITI sponsored 4 out of this 10 players to a Family and Friends tennis tournament early December 2011 and all made it to the quarter finals of their different categories in just their first national championship and in the same year of engaging the game of tennis. We give kudos to this lads.
During the 3rd week of December 2011, AITI organized a junior tennis championship at the Makurdi Club 1930, Makurdi. A total of 32 participants, 15 invited from Abuja, FCT to participate at no charge, accomodation and feeding fully cartered for by AITI. The Benue lads did not let us down, displayed special skills and brilliant performances against their opponents from Abuja, who had all started playing at an early age and have been under-going training for years.
January 2012, four of our academy boys, namely; Nicholas Ibrahim, Oche Adehi, Anthony Obekpa and Nathan Adeyi were invited to national camp by the National Junior Tennis Coach, Mr. Obale for the African Junior Championship (AJC) trials. Though they did not qualify while in camp, but left their marks in the hearts of the Nigerian Tennis Federation (NTF).
After an extensive holiday training, ANDY ITYAV TENNIS INTIATIVE has been invited to represent Benue State, 3 boys and 3 girls would feature in the under 12, 14 and 16 categories for the up-coming SETRAC0/ZENITH BANK PLC JUNIOR TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP holding from the 27th August – 1st September 2012, involving 8 states at the Abuja National Stadium Tennis Complex.
We hereby call on Sports Enthusiasts, Promoters, Talent Hunt Organisations, Tennis Lovers, Corporate Bodies, NG0’s, Government Sports Ministries and Agencies in Benue State, Nigeria and even beyond to take advantage of this initiative through support, sponsorship, promotion and partnership. We invite all to come and watch the best of tennis at the up-coming tournament mentioned above in Abuja next week.
